Most people who message us about a proposal have already picked the ring. What they haven’t picked is the place, and that’s usually where the nerves start. Kusadasi has a lot of coastline, and from a hotel balcony every bit of it looks romantic. Up close, some spots work beautifully and some are a lot harder than they look.

This is the list we’d give a friend. It covers where to go, when to go, and what tends to go wrong.

First, a word about timing

Almost everyone asks for sunset, and for good reason. Just keep in mind that sunset here moves a lot through the year. In late June the sun goes down around 20:40. By December it’s closer to 17:50. We plan backwards from that time, so the setup is finished and the photographer is hidden before the light gets good.

The other thing nobody warns you about is the wind. In summer the Aegean gets a steady northerly breeze in the afternoon, and it can be strong enough to blow out every candle on a beach in about a minute. That’s why, on windy evenings, we use LED candles, lanterns and glass holders instead of bare flames. It isn’t just a style choice.

1. Güvercinada (Pigeon Island)

The small fortress island just off the town centre, connected to the mainland by a causeway of roughly 350 metres. The walls go back to the Ottoman period, and walking out across the causeway with the old stone in front of you is a lovely build-up to the moment. It’s free to visit and right in town, so it’s easy to “just go for a walk” without raising suspicion.

The catch: it’s a public place, and on summer evenings it’s busy. It works best for couples who don’t mind a few strangers clapping. If you want privacy, think about going early in the morning instead.

2. A private beach setup

This is the classic, and it’s the one we build most. A quiet stretch of sand, a sign, flowers, a carpet or aisle, lanterns, maybe a table for dinner afterwards. Ladies Beach (Kadınlar Denizi) is close to the centre. Further south, the beaches around Davutlar and Güzelçamlı are calmer, especially outside July and August.

Sevgi Plajı in Davutlar deserves a mention. The name literally means “Love Beach”, which some people find a bit much and others find perfect. It’s small, about 550 metres, and much quieter on weekdays.

Something to know: a full setup on a public beach isn’t something you can just turn up and do. It needs arranging with the beach operator or the right people locally, and that’s a big part of what we handle.

3. A pier or jetty at blue hour

If we had to pick a personal favourite, it would be this one. A wooden pier, an aisle of lanterns leading out over the water, and the sky turning that deep blue just after sunset. Photos from this time of day look calm and expensive in a way midday photos never do.

4. A sunset dinner for two by the sea

Not everyone wants a big sign and an audience. Plenty of people would rather have a table set right at the water’s edge, dinner, and the question asked quietly over dessert. It’s also a good option if you’re not sure your partner would enjoy a big show. You can always make it bigger, but you can’t undo a crowd.

5. Your hotel room or villa

It sounds less exciting, but it’s one of the most reliable. There’s no wind, no crowd and no weather problem, and you can do it at whatever time suits you. Rose petals, candles, balloons and a “Marry Me” sign in the room while you’re out at dinner. When you come back, it’s ready. Many hotels in the area are used to this and are happy to help with access, but it has to be arranged with them in advance.

6. On a boat

Kusadasi has a busy marina, and a private boat for an hour or two around sunset is a great way to propose without anyone else around. Two honest notes. First, the sea can be choppy on windy days, so have a backup date in mind. Second, keep the ring box somewhere it can’t slide off the deck. We’ve thought about this more than we’d like to admit.

7. Şirince village

About half an hour’s drive inland, Şirince is an old hillside village known for its stone houses and fruit wines. It isn’t a sea view, but if your partner loves old streets and quiet terraces more than beaches, it’s a really nice option. Pair it with a day at Ephesus, then a dinner on a terrace in the village.

8. Dilek Peninsula National Park

The national park south of Güzelçamlı has the clearest water and greenest coves in the area: İçmeler, Kavaklıburun, Aydınlık, Karasu. Honestly, it’s stunning. But it is a protected area with set visiting hours (it usually closes in the early evening), fires and open flames aren’t allowed, and you can’t simply build a setup there. It’s a beautiful place to spend the day before you propose somewhere else that evening. We’d rather tell you that now than have you plan around it.

A couple of places we’d steer you away from

Ephesus. Everyone thinks of it, and we understand why. It’s a protected archaeological site with large crowds, strict rules and closing times, so it’s really not set up for a proposal. Go and enjoy it, just not with a ring in your pocket.

The busiest part of Long Beach in August. It’s lively and fun, but it’s not where you want to kneel down in front of a few hundred sunbathers.

What actually makes it go well

After many years of doing this, the location matters less than people think. The things that make the difference are smaller:

  • A believable reason to be there (“let’s watch the sunset” works better than anything clever).
  • A photographer who knows how to stay out of sight until the right moment.
  • Someone on the ground who can move everything indoors if the wind or rain turns.
  • Not rushing. Give yourselves ten minutes alone before anyone appears with champagne.
